CALLING ALL GREENFINGERED POETS

Part of this year’s Festival is the ‘Breaking Ground’ project and, amongst many other activities, includes a poetry competition. There are some excellent prizes available, thanks to ‘Pen & Paper’ of Harleston. Fancy having a go? Full details are available from Harleston Library. Closing date for entry is August 7th. CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOP (PART OF THE BREAKING GROUND PROJECT)

Harleston Library

Come and think about all things allotment and veggie and express yourself with words and thoughts. A fun interactive poetry workshop on a theme that will appeal to all – be inspired by the library’s guerrilla garden! All children must be accompanied.

OPEN ART & CRAFT EXHIBITION (part of the breaking ground project)

The Cygnet Bar at the Swan

This is an open exhibition for local amateur artists of art and crafts, celebrating all things allotment and veggie. With artists using a wide range of media, this exhibition will be both entertaining and thought provoking. If you wish to submit an entry(s), please contact Kate at marg@shemar23.fsnet.co.uk

AN EVENING OF WORLD MUSIC IN AID OF AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

GARDEN GNOME SCULPTURE WORKSHOP (part of the breaking ground project)

The Library

This is a wild and whacky garden gnome workshop, using modelling clay to make your own interpretation of this traditional garden art. All children must be accompanied.

THE LONDON MOZART PLAYERS

St John’s Church

The London Mozart Players (LMP) is regarded as one of the UK’s finest ensembles, internationally renowned for its outstanding live performances of the core classical repertoire. This programme, which will include Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ and Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major, will be played by a specially selected ensemble with their leader David Juritz.

3 WOMEN – 3 CONTINENTS

Wingfield Barns

Bob Edwards is a Wingfield based documentary film maker with over 30 years experience. In recent years he has been making films for Christian Aid in Africa and also a series of personal ‘portraits’ of charismatic women, all with a strong musical content.  Bob will present three of his films, each lasting about 30 mins.

POETRY READING WITH OLIVER BERNARD

Swan Hotel

Oliver Bernard, a local poet, is one of the most natural and accomplished of living poets. Together with his two brothers, art critic and photographer Bruce Bernard and journalist Jeffrey Bernard, he has been prominent in London’s literary and artistic scene.

Film Screening – Alice in Wonderland

Apollo Club

19 year old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

THE SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND

The Apollo Club

This excellent band returns by popular request. Although a traditional jazz band at heart, the group has expanded its repertoire to include many songs from the ‘swing’ era to more recent times.

MUSIC WEEKEND BEGINS AT THE SWAN

The Festival’s famous free music weekend of blues, folk and pop begins tonight with an Acoustic Evening in the Swan’s Carvery with top folk acts on the circuit including Cumbrian duo, The Gardenelles, who are making a name for themselves in the north. Don’t miss being the first in the south to hear them. There will be a beer festival and great food available the whole weekend.

AIRSHIP CELEBRATION DAY

The Pennoyer Centre, Pulham St Mary

Come and discover the new Pennoyer Centre (Norwich Rd) and enjoy a day of celebration, based around the ‘Pulham Pig’ airships that were a familiar sight in the area during the first half of the 20th century. At 3pm there will be a special showing of a rarely seen airship film – our thanks to the East Anglian Film Archive. For more information call 01379 608760

DYLAN THOMAS LOOKING BACK

St Margaret’s Church, Starston

A programme of readings from a selection of Dylan Thomas’s work including excerpts from ‘Under Milk Wood’, ‘Quite Early One Morning’ and ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog’, performed by Brian Ellis who hails from North Wales. Brian has had extensive experience in the West End and in regional theatre, both as an actor and as director. His West End credits include Fiddler on the Roof, Treasure Island and Annie.

MUSIC WEEKEND at the SWAN

The music starts in the car park from noon and features great local acts and a top regional covers band to get you dancing into the night.

Prior’s Croft Barn

This is a superb collection of vintage wireless, gramophone and sound recording equipment. The theme this year is ‘gramophones and mechanically produced sound’, although wirelesses, wire recorders, early videos and film projectors (many of which will be working) will also be on view.

The FRIENDS OF NORFOLK DIALECT (F.O.N.D.) will also be represented at Prior’s Croft. All are welcome to find out about the workings of F.O.N.D. and to hear recordings made by them in the last 10 years.

FREE EVENT: Tea and coffee will be available on the terrace.

Prior’s Croft is situated on the main road in Withersdale Street. From Harleston, it is the second building on the left after the 30mph sign. Parking available – please drive in.

Sunday August 29th Noon – 6pm

MUSIC WEEKEND at the Swan and the Cherry Tree

Begin the day with Jazz over lunch followed by a day of top musical entertainment until 6pm. More music will be available at the Cherry Tree from 8pm. Get the full line up as it develops at www.myspace.com/harlestonfestival .

HORRIBLE HARLESTON

WITH GORDON LASCELLES

A  heritage walk with a difference! Come and experience the darker side of our town’s past.

The walk will take about an hour. Meet in Broad Street outside the Church gate. Please wear sensible shoes.

FAMILY FUN DAY

A free family fun day at the Harleston Recreation Ground where there will be vintage cars, tractors and military vehicles. Events in the arena will include line dancing, whacky races and kickboxing demonstrations. There will also be stalls, BBQ, bar, a car boot sale and bouncy castles.

A very special event this year is a flypast by The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and an RAF Sea King helicopter. Both of these are dependent on weather and operational availability. The Festival is grateful to the RAFA for arranging this.
